David A. Schawk

Matthews International, Office of the President, SGK Group President

Some years after attending St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy, David Schawk entered what was a family business in the late 1970s. Learning the business from the ground up, he immersed himself in all aspects of its operations and managed the operations of one of the company’s plants under the watchful eye of his entrepreneurial father.

Fifteen years later, David’s responsibilities had grown to overseeing more than 15 of the company’s plants. In 1993, he was elected President and Chief Executive Officer of Schawk, Inc.

Under David’s leadership, the company, rebranded SGK, grew into a global provider of brand development and brand deployment services to many of the world’s biggest companies and brands. In 2012, David relinquished the role of President to focus on serving the company as Chief Executive Officer.

In 2014, SGK was acquired by Matthews International Corporation and David was named President of the SGK Brand Solutions group. In 2017, David moved into a new role in the Matthews International Office of The President. In this role, he is focused on strategic planning and potential acquisitions for SGK.

Today, David serves as Group President of SGK, the brand solutions segment of the company. He is also part of the Matthews Executive Leadership Team.

David has served in leadership capacities on the boards of both national industry associations and global non-profit organizations.

Gary R. Kohl

President, SGK

A 20+ year veteran of the print and digital communications industry, Gary Kohl joined SGK from RR Donnelley, where he most recently served as Group Senior Vice President, Digital Solutions, Global Packaging and Printed Electronics Groups.

Throughout Gary’s tenure at Donnelley, he held additional senior level positions in sales, marketing and general management, achieving topline growth by expanding current services into new markets, growing existing services into fundamentally new ones, creating new verticals within industries already served and opening production facilities in new geographic markets.

From driving the Group’s foundational strategic plan to building new capabilities and services and creating and leading a new business unit to commercialize the development of a highly innovative new product, Gary brings an extensive set of skills and accomplishments to SGK.

As Executive Vice President, Global Development at SGK, Gary played a critical role on SGK’s Executive Leadership Team, developing strategies to accelerate the growth of our business and increase revenue across our regions in APAC, EMEA, and the Americas. 

In 2017, Gary was appointed President of SGK. Today, he is responsible for running SGK’s global business on a day-to-day basis.

Gary earned a B.S. in Business Administration from Boston University and completed executive coursework at Columbia University and The Kellogg School of Management. Gary also achieved Champion Level Six Sigma Certification.

Leadership Team

Brad Wills

ESVP, Global Operations

As Executive Senior Vice President of Global Operations, Brad has direct oversight for the delivery of all brand capabilities at the global, regional, and local levels.  Brad leads our Regional Group Managing Directors, providing common direction for the operational excellence of our regional teams in the Americas, EMEA, and Asia-Pacific.

A 28-year veteran of the graphic communications industry, Brad has played pivotal leadership roles at SGK, particularly in our international markets.  He was responsible for initially setting up, integrating and then leading the Company’s brand development and deployment operations in Asia-Pacific. Based in Asia for more than a decade, Brad oversaw the creation and development of the Central Production Center and Smart Source concept, which is widely copied by many in the industry today. Brad was instrumental in spearheading the integration of the Company’s Asian, European, and Latin American capabilities into SGK’s global offering/local implementation model, now widely recognized as the leading model for global brand development and deployment activities worldwide.

Prior to his work in Asia-Pacific, Brad led our European business following SGK’s acquisition of Seven Worldwide and Winnetts in 2005.  Brad streamlined and integrated two large, diverse organizations into one cohesive and strong group.

Brad earned a B.A. in Graphic Communications from Illinois State University.

Dan Stopar

Vice President, Finance

As the Vice President of Finance for SGK, Dan has global responsibility for the finance and accounting functions of the SGK Brand Solutions business segment of Matthews International. Applying 25 years of diverse financial leadership experience, Dan played a critical role in the due diligence phase of the SGK acquisition, including serving as a core member of the Integration Management Office and leader of the CFO Services functional integration team. 

Since joining Matthews International in 2013, Dan has demonstrated strategic and financial leadership, working closely with cross-functional business leaders to drive growth and profitability. He has held key leadership roles in across Matthews International, most recently as part of the Corporate Development team. Prior to joining Matthews, Dan has held various positions with increasing responsibility at Philips Electronics/Respironics, Marconi Communications, and Arthur Andersen. 

Dan holds a BA in Accounting from the University of Notre Dame.

Matt Bennett

Head of Global Solutions Development and Marketing Services

As Executive Vice President of Global Client Engagement, Matt partners with global operations to drive profitable growth while also building out the strategies, activation plans and necessary team structure to execute against our organic growth goals. Matt has worked on both the client-facing and operational sides of our organization, providing him with the insights and experience to effectively grow our client partnerships and to provide strong, strategic leadership for our global client engagement team.

Since joining SGK 12 years ago, Matt has held a variety of leadership roles, including European Director of Sales, Managing Director of our Leeds, UK, facility, and Group Managing Director in Europe, where he led both brand development and brand deployment initiatives. Most recently, Matt has served as Senior Vice President, Growth Strategies, Product Development, and Innovation, building SGK’s practices and brands through innovation and creative, collaborative thinking.

Adam Ransom

Group Managing Director, APAC

As Group Managing Director, APAC, Adam is responsible for leading all brand development and deployment operations across the Asia-Pacific region. He is responsible for the oversight of 11+ facilities, ensuring appropriate resource allocation and capacity to meet all client initiatives in the region.

A 20-year veteran of the industry, Adam has been with SGK for 10 years, previously serving as the Managing Director of SGK’s Sydney, Australia, facility. Adam led core premedia production services, including production art, prepress, workflow consulting, technology tools, and on-site facility management and support programs. Prior to joining SGK, Adam worked at several multination, blue-chip consumer goods companies, providing him invaluable insights into our clients’ challenges, operations, and strategies.

Adam graduated from the University of Western Sydney with a Masters Degree in Management.

Adam became a member of the SGK Executive Leadership Team in 2015.

Dr. Tomas Sterkenburgh

Regional Group Managing Director, EMEA

Having graduated from University of Duisburg with a Ph.D. in Physics, Dr. Tomas Sterkenburgh joined the family-owned company Saueressig in 1997. As head of Research and Development he was responsible for driving market-changing innovations, which have had a lasting effect on the company's image as one of the market-leading companies. This reputation has helped increasing the company's brand value over the past years. With his ambition and drive, he was appointed as Managing Director, from then on being responsible for the operations and success of the Saueressig.

Ten years later, Dr. Tomas Sterkenburgh was promoted to being Group Manager for the Saueressig Group, successfully leading seven plants across Europe and the Middle East with a wide variety of products and services. He immersed himself in shaping an organization, including all business aspects from finance, sales and operations to HR, IT and R&D. He linked a variety of topics and drove the organization towards sustainable success: from people and relations via strategy and organization to methodology and tools.

From 2010-2014, Dr. Tomas Sterkenburgh was Managing Director of Matthews Europe GmbH & Co. KG, responsible for the rotogravure and engineering business. Under his leadership, the group of companies has been transformed from individual product suppliers to being a strong service network that customers from the converting industry as well as brand owners, value especially for its quality and solution-providing reputation. With his analytical and people skills, he focused his efforts on building a strong team that uses synergies effectively, thereby increasing the company's success.

In 2015, following the acquisition of SGK by Matthews International, and the integration of Saueressig into the SGK Brand Solutions Division, Dr. Sterkenburgh was named to the SGK Executive Leadership Team and continues in his leadership role with Saueressig.

Rob Moore

Managing Director, UK

As Managing Director, UK, Rob is responsible for the direct oversight of SGK’s facilities across the United Kingdom. He will ensure the operational excellence of all deployment initiatives in the UK and will provide leadership to drive agility and efficiency in our processes across the region.

Rob has worked for SGK for close to 20 years and has held Managing Director roles in ten different locations across both the UK and continental Europe, providing him with the insights and knowledge necessary to oversee operations in the UK. In his previous role as Managing Director of the Manchester, Leeds, London, Poland and Spain operations, he has won and managed many of the company’s leading clients. Prior to joining SGK, Rob worked at a major UK retailer and at Unilever, giving him knowledge and insights into our clients’ operations.

Rob holds a Masters’ degree in Business Administration from Henley.

Rob became a member of the SGK Executive Leadership Team in 2015.

Michael Dempe

President, IDL Worldwide

As the leader of global operations for IDL Worldwide for more than 28 years, Michael plays a key role on SGK’s executive team, overseeing IDL’s continued success and growth.  He ensures IDL’s business strategies and operational excellence as a cornerstone of SGK’s brand development offering.

Since joining IDL in 1987, Michael has managed all of the company’s global merchandising operations and played a key role in transitioning the business into the public sector.  He has played a pivotal role in shaping IDL’s overall business strategy, applying his experience in finance, operations management, and business guidance to lead the company to success.

Prior to joining IDL, Michael worked for 10 years with an international public accounting firm, providing him unique insights into maintaining both financial and operational excellence.

Michael earned a BS in Accounting from Penn State University.
